"R O C O C O, with a hint of Classicism. Just don’t tell Frederick....

Who would’ve thought that in the heart of Sanssouci, the most extravagant Rococo palace of them all, you’d find a vestibule that flirts. just slightly with neoclassicism?

Frederick the Great, Prussia’s most famously Rococo-obsessed monarch, never embraced the neoclassical wave. Even in his later years—when the style was sweeping through Europe and championed by his own nephew and heir—he refused to follow. And yet, this rectangular entrance hall—right before stepping into the Marble Hall—tells a different story. Ten pairs of Corinthian columns in white stucco marble, with golden capitals, rise in perfect rhythm along the walls. They’re set in front of almost-flat pilasters, a classical gesture hidden behind Rococo’s usual flourish.

Overhead, a painted vault reveals Flora, Roman goddess of flowers, floating in the clouds while genii scatter blooms and fruit from above. The ceiling, painted in 1746 by Swedish artist Johann Harper, feels light, festive—yet measured, as if the room knows it’s being watched closely by history.

The symmetry continues on the ground: three French doors looking onto the courtyard, mirrored by three shallow blind arches on the opposite wall. And above them, golden reliefs by Georg Franz Ebenhech bring Bacchus into the scene—myth, vine leaves, and festive abundance. Every door panel is a celebration of detail: golden grapevines, musical instruments, herms—carved with exquisite grace by Johann Christian Hoppenhaupt.

And then, without warning, a marble Ares Ludovisi, copied in 1730 by Lambert-Sigisbert Adam, stands sentinel. A gift from Louis XV himself, it landed in Potsdam in 1752, along with the sculptures that once graced the French Rondell. A war god in the king’s house of pleasure.

For a king so loyal to Rococo, this vestibule is a curious pause. It doesn’t abandon the style—it just lets in a breeze of balance, proportion, and mythological weight. Not quite neoclassical, not quite Rococo. Just Sanssouci being... complicated" 📷️ and copy via @jepsolell

The G A L L E R I A Doria Pamphilj (often Doria Pamphilj Gallery or Doria Pamphili Gallery in English) is a large private art collection housed in the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj in Rome, Italy, between Via del Corso and Via della Gatta. The principal entrance is on the Via del Corso. (Until recently, the entrance to the gallery was from the Piazza del Collegio Romano.) The palace façade on Via del Corso is adjacent to a church, Santa Maria in Via Lata. Like the palace, it is still privately owned by the princely Roman family Doria Pamphili. Tours of the state rooms often culminate in concerts of Baroque and Renaissance music, paying tribute to the setting and the masterpieces it contains (Wikipedia)⁠
