This is a 19th century Spanish processional statue of the Virgin Mary, known as a “santos” figure. The statue is made of carved and hand painted wood and her “cloud” base is gesso and wood. She has glass eyes which is a mark of quality. Santos figures are carved wooden figures of saints or other religious figures, often used for home altars in Spanish and Portuguese cultures. The figure is dressed in her original embroidered silk robe with lace details and she has a halo-like gilded metal star crown behind her head. The statue is often identified as the Immaculate Conception, which is a doctrine of the Catholic Church stating that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception. She is missing two fingers on her right hand.
