A collection of eleven antique plaster cameos and intaglios of French origin, elegantly presented within a painted wooden tray originally used for housing pieces from the British Museum. Each cameo features finely detailed neoclassical relief decoration, with a mix of roundels and oval intaglios depicting saints, heraldic family crests, and a Greco-Roman horseman in full relief.
The reverse of each piece is inscribed in French, identifying the subject, and remains visible as the cameos are thoughtfully secured to the tray with small hooks. This allows both the decorative and historical aspects to be appreciated. The tray itself enhances the presentation, creating a striking display or wall-mounted piece.
These are clearly not modern castings and show signs of age, although an exact date is difficult to determine.
