A large mid century (circa 1950’s) original French blue and white enamelled plaque translated to ‘For our children cross carefully‘. Enamel signs are usually vitreous enamel on steel (pigmented glass fused to metal). This sign has a glossy, slightly glassy surface with a few chips that show a white/grey ground. Most surviving French enamel commercial signs date from late 1800s through mid-20th century, with a big production peak between 1900–1950 (advertising, shop signs, street signs, public works). Common subjects were brand advertising (food, drink, petrol/oil, soap), shop names, public service/street signs, and factory/industrial safety signs. It does have some wear commensurate with age and use.
