An English country house correspondence box, dating to the Edwardian period and crafted in beautifully figured fruitwood c.1900 – 1910. The hinged lid, bordered with subtle gadrooned moulding, is inlaid with mother of pearl and fitted with two posting slots, each labelled “Answered” and “Unanswered.” The interior opens to a neatly divided twin-compartment arrangement, retaining its original green lining paper. Such boxes would have been used in well-appointed private homes, where household staff were responsible for organising and distributing daily correspondence for the master and mistress. There are some small losses to the mother of pearl inlay and general signs of age and use, while the interior shows expected wear. The box does not retain its key.
