A pair of limited Edition Table Lamps, 1970s designed by renowned Belgian designer Georges Mathias for Maho Design, combining sculptural form with the distinctive glamour of Hollywood Regency. The lamps feature a black polycarbonate body with a finely etched 23-carat gold-plated brass panel, decorated with an atmospheric natural scene of migrating birds in flight. Each panel within this limited-edition series was individually produced, with variations in the landscape and wildlife imagery, making each lamp unique. These examples are signed and individually numbered 207/250, and 02/250 from a very limited edition of just 250 pieces. The original gold-plated panel retains its decorative label confirming the 23-carat gold finish. The new bespoke silk shades are supported on an elegant brass rod and can be adjusted in height using the original screw mechanism, allowing the proportions of the lamp to be altered to suit different settings. With its combination of geometric form, black lacquer-like finish, gilded brass and hand-etched decoration, the lamps have a wonderful 1970s Hollywood Regency character, with influences of Art Deco and Oriental design. Wear commensurate with age, the finials on each lamp are not a match.
Georges Mathias established his reputation in industrial and product design, working with major international companies before establishing his own design studio. His later career included collaborations with prestigious names including Renault, Hermès and Louis Vuitton, as well as teaching at the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle (ENSCI) in Paris.
