A beautiful pair of late Victorian sterling silver stamped opera glasses, dating from around 1890–1910. The tapered barrels are richly embossed with intricate scrolling foliate decoration, showcasing the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail associated with quality optical instruments of the period. The polished metal eyepieces and bridge contrast elegantly with the ornate sterling silver bodies, while the original amber-coloured central focusing wheel adds warmth and character. The central cartouche have engraved initials which I believe to be J M. Originally designed for use at the theatre, opera, concerts, and horse racing, these opera glasses are equally desirable today as a decorative display piece for a desk, library, or cabinet of curiosities. Condition: Good antique condition with some age-related wear and dents. The focusing mechanism operates smoothly.
