A striking antique French mirror with a decorative carved wooden frame, recently refinished in silver leaf and skilfully burnished to give a beautiful, time-worn finish. The shaped frame is richly decorated with scrolling acanthus foliage, delicate foliate details and an impressive central crest featuring a sculptural shell and floral motif. The silver finish really brings out the detail of the carving while giving the mirror a fresh and elegant look. The original antique mercury mirror plate is wonderfully distressed, with areas of natural foxing, oxidation and wear throughout. The aged glass gives a lovely atmospheric quality, with a softer, more muted reflection that adds to the character of the piece.
