An impressive mid 19th-century French Louis Philippe buffet à deux corps, crafted from exceptionally figured flame mahogany, with a rich, deep colour and beautifully aged natural patina. This is a stunning example of this era’s furniture design, showcasing its characteristic rounded doucine (ogee) mouldings at the top cornices, clean unadorned structural lines, and the use of exceptionally figured flame mahogany veneers.  Flame mahogany is a particularly prized form of highly figured timber, created from the junction where a major branch meets the trunk. Because only a limited amount of this distinctive timber can be obtained from each tree, it was a premium material traditionally reserved for the finest quality furniture. The dramatic, rippling figure seen across this cabinet is further enhanced by the cabinetmaker’s skill in selecting, cutting and carefully matching the veneers. The cabinet follows the elegant proportions of the Louis Philippe period, with a classic two-part, stepped-back construction. The upper section features two large panelled doors, later fitted with antique mirror panels, which add light and depth while providing useful display and storage space behind. The lower section has two frieze drawers with recessed pulls above a spacious two-door cupboard.
