A rare and highly decorative Victorian silver-plated epergne stand by Thomas Bradbury & Sons of Sheffield, dating to 1864. Originally designed as an elaborate dining table centrepiece, this exceptional piece has been professionally converted into an attractive table lamp. The design features a cast pair of palm tree trunks with richly textured bark, rising into an elegant canopy of finely detailed palm fronds. In its original form, the palm trees supported a cut crystal bowl used for displaying fruit, flowers, or sweetmeats. The substantial tripod base is richly ornamented with Rococo-inspired scrollwork, shells, acanthus leaves, and repoussé cartouches, showcasing the superb quality of Thomas Bradbury & Sons’ craftsmanship. Two engraved Latin mottos further enhance its historical appeal: Deus Pascit Corvos (“God feeds the ravens”) and Ne Quid Nimis (“Nothing in excess”). Later in its life, the epergne was thoughtfully converted into a table lamp with the addition of a central stem and lamp fitting, giving this striking object a practical new purpose without detracting from its original beauty. The lamp has been professionally rewired to New Zealand standards and paired with a black linen shade so it is ready for use. Thomas Bradbury & Sons was one of Sheffield’s most esteemed silversmiths, with its origins tracing back to the renowned partnership of Fenton, Creswick & Co., founded in 1773. The firm earned an international reputation for producing some of the finest silver and electroplated wares of the Victorian era, and pieces bearing the Bradbury name remain highly sought after for their exceptional craftsmanship, quality, and enduring decorative appeal.
