An elegant signed Chinese three-fold folding screen featuring finely hand-embroidered silk panels enhanced with gilt thread in the Chinoiserie taste, dating from the early 20th century, c.1900–1925. Originally a four-panel screen, it is beautifully worked in a refined palette of taupe, sepia, cream, soft blue and ochre, depicting classical Chinese “Birds and Flowers” motifs including cranes, waterfowl, exotic birds, bamboo, flowering shrubs and tranquil waterside scenes. The intricate silk embroidery, highlighted with delicate gilt thread detailing, showcases remarkable craftsmanship and the fine satin stitching characteristic of traditional Chinese regional techniques such as Suzhou embroidery. The panels are set within dark Chinese hardwood frames, with a signature or artist’s mark visible to the lower right panel. Created for the Western export market during the height of the European fascination with Chinoiserie, this decorative screen reflects the Belle Époque appreciation for East Asian artistry. A striking statement piece, it would suit a bedroom, dressing room or living space, equally impressive displayed as a room divider or as a wall-mounted textile artwork. There is some age-related damage to the delicate silk panels, as expected with a piece of this age, however the overall condition is very good.
