This impressive antique Last Rites kit, also known as a sick call box, is a fine example of late 19th to early 20th-century Catholic liturgical craftsmanship. Believed to date from around the early 1900s, the piece was produced by the Homan Silver Plate Company of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Housed in a large, beautifully crafted wooden box, the case features ornate brass corner accents and a raised brass cross on the lid. One set of back hinges have been replaced. The interior retains most of its original sacramental components, used by priests for administering the sacraments to the sick and dying. These include combination crucifix, holy water font and candelabrum, holy-water sprinkler, candles, glass bottle with screw top for holy-water, and spoon-cup, 5 3/8″ plate. Includes additional crucifix, and vial of oil.
The included candle holders are likely made of plated lead, typical of the period and consistent with other Homan religious items. This sacred set is a rare and meaningful piece of American Catholic history—an evocative artifact from a time when pastoral care was carried from parish to home with reverence and ritual.
