Antique Bone Inlay Syrian Savonarola Curule Armchair
A late 19th – early 20th century collapsible Bone Inlay Syrian Savonarola Curule Throne Armchair in excellent condition. All of the bone inlay is intact and it is encrusted with stars. The decorative bone inlay on the seat and X-frame of interlaced curved splats demonstrates wonderful craftsmanship. The back of the Curule is plain black. Developed in the late 15th century in Italy, the Savonarola chair was originally created to be foldable, and thus a more portable, version of the ancient Roman curule chair. The Savonarola however had more angular legs and the addition of a low back and though the basic construction of the chair was simple, there are many variations in armrest, backrest, and feet, as well as the type of wood used. The Savonarola didn’t get its name until the 19th century when homage was paid to a famous Renaissance Dominican friar, Girolamo Savonarola, who led Florence during the late 15th century.
