A rare early to mid 19th century Black Forest carved wood nutcracker in the form of an old woman’s head. This example is hand-carved in the traditional Black Forest folk art style. Nutcrackers of this type often feature anthropomorphic figures with exaggerated facial expressions, and this piece is a fine example. The woman’s hinged mouth opens to crack nuts, combining both a decorative and practical use. Black Forest nutcrackers were traditionally made in the mountain regions of Black Forest, particularly in Germany and Switzerland, and are highly regarded as examples of late 19th-century European folk carving.
