An 18th-century Aubusson bordered verdure tapestry titled Landscape with Parrot with a heavy linen backing. It has brass rings to the back for wall hanging. Known for their lush natural scenes, verdure tapestries were a hallmark of the Aubusson workshops in France. The term “verdure” refers to tapestries that highlight rich greenery and landscape elements. This particular tapestry presents a forested setting, featuring a mix of trees, plants and intricately rendered foliage with a large parrot in a tree. Crafted from wool and silk, the tapestry reflects the exceptional craftsmanship of Aubusson artisans, who were celebrated for their precise designs and the skillful use of shading to give depth and texture to the vegetation. The tapestry is in very good condition. The design process for a tapestry was typically initiated by a wealthy patron, royal family, or religious institution. These commissioners would specify the subject matter, whether it be a historical event, religious scene, or a decorative theme such as landscapes or mythological figures. Artists and weavers collaborated closely on the final design, making necessary adjustments to ensure it could be effectively translated into woven form.
