A mid 19th century English terracotta garden urn (John Blashfield)
A wonderful mid 19th century English terracotta garden urn attributed to John Marriot Blashfield (stamped to the base). Some chips to the base commensurate with age but they do not detract from this lovely piece.
Blashfield had a manufacturing premise in Millwall with a retail shop in Edgeware Road but moved to Stamford,Lincolnshire in 1859 to be nearer the clay beds. He won medals for his terracotta at the International Exhibition in 1862 and a silver medal at the Paris International Exhibition of 1867. His Terracotta Company Works sadly closed in 1875 after undergoing too ambitious and large a commission for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
