A large Empire velvet framed mirror c.1820
A beautiful very large antique brown velvet mirror with gilded bronze stud work and trim typical of the Empire period. The frame has detailed motifs and rosettes which embellish the frame’s corners, sides, top and bottom. Yes, the old velvet is original and does have old worm holes (but the worms are long gone) and wear commensurate with its age. However, if you don’t like it as it is, imagine it with new velvet and re fixing the rosettes and decorative accents. It would be stunning. The Empire style became popular in America around 1815 and developed in Paris at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. It is the official style of the Napoleonic Empire and relied heavily on the revival of antique Roman forms. The mirror is very versatile as it can be hung portrait or landscape. It is a real statement piece.
