A large 19th century gilt bronze and wood crucifix
A 19th century gilt bronze corpus christi on ebonised mahogany cross with gilt metal appliques and central celestial rays. The INRI represents the Latin inscription which in English translates to ”Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum” meaning ”Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. The skull and crossed bones represents death, and it is placed under the feet of the crucified Jesus in order to illustrate this concept, it is also a reference to Golgotha, the “place of the skull” where Jesus was crucified.
