$1,950.00
A large French late 19th century ebonised altar crucifix mounted on a base of a reddish-brown and white veined marble fashioned in the neo-classical style. The ‘Corpus Christi’, is in gilded bronze as are the other elements. The crucifix has a skull and crossbones at the base of the cross. This symbol is sometimes seen on crucifixes and is believed to represent the skull of Adam, who, according to Christian tradition, was buried at the site where Jesus was crucified, also known as Golgotha, or the “Place of the Skull”. The presence of Adam’s skull at the foot of the cross symbolises that Christ is the “new Adam” who redeemed humanity from original sin. There is an old repair to the front of the marble base as shown and old repairs to the rear.
