A very distinctive and whimsical antique nineteenth century German Black Forest two tier console table in the naturalistic style of woven wicker set within elaborate realistic branches. It has traces of old borer but it has been specially fumigated twice by both spray application and injection. A layer of wax has then been applied to cover the holes.
The Black Forest is a mountainous, forested region in southwest Germany. Woodcarving and clockmaking developed as a local cottage industry, originally as a way for farmers to supplement their income during the winter months. The region became renowned for its cuckoo clocks and the precise craftsmanship of clocks and watches starting in the 18th century. Black Forest furniture often displayed a distinctive carving style known as “Black Forest Carving,” which featured motifs of forest animals (especially bears), trees, branches, leaves, and fruits. This unique style gained international fame, appearing at major exhibitions like the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900. By the 19th century, Black Forest carved goods were seen as symbols of luxury and wealth, eagerly sought after by Victorian travellers and even included in royal collections.
