19th century English grand handled silver plated letter opener with a blade in ebony – silver mark for year 1888. One small chip near handle as shown in the photos

Ebony is a dense black wood which is finely textured and has a smooth finish when polished making it highly prized for cabinet making. Species of ebony are native to Southern India and Western Africa.
