A chamber of S I L K and splendor The Grand Bedro A chamber of S I L K and splendor

The Grand Bedroom of the Lower Prince’s Quarter in the Neues Palais of Potsdam is a remarkable example of 18th-century Rococo splendor. Commissioned by Frederick II of Prussia after the Seven Years’ War, the palace was designed to impress dignitaries and members of the royalty, serving as a setting for court events and celebrations. Within this context, the Grand Bedroom reflected the wealth and sophistication of the Prussian monarchy.

This bedroom was part of the luxurious apartments located in the northern wing of the palace, intended to house members of Frederick II’s royal family. Its prominent position and elaborate decor indicate it was designed to accommodate high-ranking royals in comfort and style.

The bedroom’s furnishings are predominantly Rococo and noted for their comfort. Among the most remarkable pieces is a canapé crafted by Matthias Müller in 1768. This sofa reflects a transition towards a more restrained and discreet Rococo style, combining ornamental elegance with functionality and comfort. Müller’s design is characterized by soft curved lines and a less elaborate decoration, indicating an evolution of the Rococo style toward more practical and refined forms. Additionally, the bedroom houses a corner cabinet made of ebony by Heinrich Wilhelm Spindler, a renowned German cabinetmaker of the Rococo period. This piece, adorned with intricate floral inlays and gilt bronze fittings, is considered one of the most significant creations of furniture art in Berlin and Potsdam.

A distinctive feature of this room is its silk wall covering, which displays a chrysanthemum pattern. Although the original design dates back to the 18th century, the current version was recreated in Lyon in 1889, faithfully following the historical patterns. This meticulous reproduction underscores the importance of preserving the aesthetic authenticity of the space, allowing visitors to experience the opulent atmosphere of the era

The cloister at Wilton House, as seen in The World The cloister at Wilton House, as seen in The World of Interiors.
"The Gothic Revival cloister evokes Wilton’s abbatial origins, and once again forms the setting for a celebrated collection of ancient marbles assembled by the Eighth Earl of Pembroke between 1690 and 1730. It is the work of the architect James Wyatt, whose reshaping of the house took 11 years to complete. John Fowler picked out the plaster vaulting in shades of ochre".
