"A glint of A U T U M N in the English countryside "A glint of A U T U M N in the English countryside...

📍Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, a Victorian country estate built in the Italianate architectural style between 1861 and 1863 for Charles Sabine Augustus Thellusson, descendent of Peter Thellusson, banker from Geneva and director of the Bank of England who purchased the land with an older Georgian estate in 1790 (which was torn down by Charles and replaced with Brodsworth)...

As one of England’s best preserved Victorian country houses, it is a Grade 1 listed property full of original furniture, fixtures and decorations, set within manicured period formal gardens, and managed by @englishheritage"...

A repost from The King’s Library at the Neues Pala A repost from The King’s Library at the Neues Palais: Frederick II in private

"Today we enter the Neues Palais in Potsdam, but not through its representational spaces. This is Frederick II’s private library, conceived as a place of use rather than ceremony, of concentration rather than display.

The room is markedly untheatrical. Shelving prioritises accessibility over symmetry, and the predominance of octavo volumes reveals an active, practical library. These were books meant to be handled, annotated, and returned to the shelf, not admired from a distance.

The linguistic choice is unequivocal. French dominates the collection. Voltaire, Bayle, Montesquieu, Racine, Corneille. Frederick wrote almost exclusively in French, which he regarded as the only suitable vehicle for philosophy and political thought. His long, often conflictive correspondence with Voltaire was not cultural affectation, but part of a conscious intellectual programme: to govern through reason, not precedent.

Spatially, the library is inseparable from the King’s most private sphere. It is accessed through a discreet door beside his bed, a service passage connecting a sequence of rooms reserved solely for Frederick himself: his bedroom, a small private dining room, the so-called “room of the dogs”, and this library. The proximity reinforces its function. This was a working tool, integrated into daily life, not a symbolic backdrop.

Today, the King’s private apartments are undergoing restoration. The library remains as documentary evidence of Frederick II as a reader and writer, and of a ruler who shaped his political identity through books as much as through power.

With thanks to @spsgmuseum and @sanssouci.palace for the exceptional access". Photo and copy via one of my favourite account to follow @jepsolell

“Built in the 15th century by the powerful Villiers family, the castle of L’Isle-Adam is a testament to medieval and Renaissance architecture. Located on an island of Oise, it owes its name to Adam de Villiers, lord of places”.

D O M A I N E de Courances "Here are some of my D O M A I N E de Courances

"Here are some of my favorite photos of the Courances estate, in Essonne. It's a place where greenery is everywhere, where the fresh air is really felt, away from the bustle of the city. Feeling peaceful, almost like hanging out of time. The castle wasn't open for visits, but the small gardens, in particular the Japanese garden, are really worth the trip. Can't wait to go back to explore the interior, especially since people are said to still live there, which makes it even more intriguing".
