Throughout history, societies have often conveyed wealth and power through conspicuous consumption. Periods, such as the Baroque and the Gilded Age, saw Maximalism reach a crescendo with their grandiose expressions of affluence, however, demonstrating the cyclicality of tastes, these styles were later met with subsequent eras of understated elegance. After decades of beige, boutique hotel-like interiors reigning supreme, the pendulum is starting to swing again in Maximalism’s favor, though its applications are far less homogenized.⁠

Too M A G I C A L not to reshare. Château d’Anet, is part of a unique Renaissance ensemble near Dreux, and is the home of a branch of the Yturbe family. It was built from 1547 to 1552 by Philibert de l’Orme (d. 1570) for Henri II’s mistress, Diane de Poitiers (d. 1566). She features as Diana, goddess of the hunt, in the Fountain of Diana and in other sculpted ornaments. The castle was conceived as a U-shape, with the chapel on the east side. However parts of the chateau were destroyed after the Revolution and now only one wing remains opposite the chapel. The staircase seen here, reconfigured in the 18th Century, seems enormous for the building in its reduced form. Various descendants of Louis XIV lived in the chateau; now meticulously looked after my members of the Yturbe family who have lovingly restored the buildings and ensure a stable future for the estate copy by @amjadrauf1 and 📷️ via chateaudanet and @fhphoto ⁠

📍Hampstead Pergola & Hill Gardens, London, England, a hidden gem that was initially part of Hill House, an early 19th-century villa. The villa was rebuilt and extended in the early 1900s by William H. Lever, 1st Viscount Leverthulme and later Lord Leverhulme, who, along with his brother, founded today what is Unilever. The pergola and gardens were designed and built by landscape architect Thomas Mawson basically as a party place for London’s elite to mingle, indulging in extravagant social functions hosted by Leverhulme set amid glorious surroundings. It is now a public space, owned by the London City Council since 1960, and is also listed as a wedding venue via @playingwithstags⁠
