"H A N D S up all lovers of neoclassicism!

If you were one of them, the Łazienki Complex must be a place of pilgrimage for you.

🇵🇱With its beginnings in the 17th century, the last three decades of the 18th century were those of maximum splendour. When Stanisław August Poniatowski came to power as King-Elect of Poland in 1764 he set his eyes on this property. When he acquired it, the entire property was transformed by the best national and international landscape designers and architects. Several pavilions and the grand central palace were erected as summer residences for him and his family, with interiors that are considered some of the finest in Polish neoclassicism.

Before going into detail in future publications, I would like to share with you a tasting of three interiors to give you an idea of their elegance:

1. The dining room of the Łazienki Palace: here the king used to organise petit comité dinners every Thursday with intellectuals and his fellow freemasons. Its elongated shape with two niches at each end, each with columns, reminded me of some of Robert Adam’s examples in the UK, such as the dining room at Syon House.

2. The octagonal bedroom and study of the “White House”: built as a “pleasure house” around 1774, this small villa was to be one of the guest houses in the park. In 1803 King Louis XVIII spent part of his summer in exile here.

3. View of the landscape room in the Myślewicki Palace: in this painted space we can appreciate the taste for the “Grand Tour” through its murals. Probably painted by Antoni Herliczka, we see imaginary architectures of ruins in a romantic background. This palace was built for the King’s nephew.
