C A S I T A del Príncipe
"When first impressions matter....

The foyer of the Casita del Principe at El Escorial proves it! This almost palatial pavilion contains one of the most exquisite neoclassical and empire (or Fernandine as we say here) decorations in Spain. Already from the entrance we can perceive the quality of materials, finishes and artists represented.

One of the first things we see just entering is the incredible Roman-style vaulted ceiling. This art piece was initially painted in oil by Vicente Gómez, but was later restored in 1794 by his pupil Manuel Pérez.

In other hand we find a very curious hanging fabric in the walls. Restored in modern times, it’s not the one described in the inventories of 1811 and 1824 as “satin with an apple-green floral background or purple.” However, the borders remain original, crafted in 1797 by Camille Pernon, with floral scrolls designed by Dugourc, imitating the pilasters of the Vatican’s loggias. The corners are decorated with butterfly motifs, which were sent by Lyon silk makers in September 1798.

The screen, along with the ornate fireplace mirror, moldings, baseboards, and seating with carved vine and leaf details, were all made by master cabinetmaker José López during the room’s renovation in 1798. Andrés del Peral handled the gilding and painting of the chairs, while José Cherou carved the rest of the woodwork until he passed away in 1798. His widow, Rosalía Paniagua, finished the job.

The room highlights too by the collection of painting. In one wall we have two 17th-century Flemish works: Garlands of Flowers with Figures by Benito Espinós and four overdoor flower paintings by Valencian artist Miguel Parra in the other one. These sit alongside Saint John the Baptist, a painting that was once attributed to Annibale Carracci.
