P A R I S "The fabulous photos of @retro_paris_ ar P A R I S "The fabulous photos of @retro_paris_ are a testimony of the past of Paris in 1880-1900. 🇫🇷🫶✨

💡In 1887, the Eiffel Tower was not yet finished, but it already had its red color which it will keep until 1906. The Moulin Rouge was the first Parisian building to use electricity because it needed a sign that could be seen from far away all night long. The Place and the Pont Saint Michel have not changed since 1900, unlike Notre-Dame which has lost its spire for a few years. It will be rebuilt identically in a few years. The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States, already looked great in its Parisian construction workshop in 1884, two years before its inauguration in New York" Photos and copy via @paris.explore

"R O M E reimagined in English proportion. "R O M E reimagined in English proportion.

There’s a distinctly English obsession—persistent, quiet, and curiously noble—with entrances. Not just thresholds, but grand vestibules, imagined as miniature forums of power. Country houses from the 18th century reimagined the ancient Roman world not in marble ruins, but in newly quarried stone, filtered through Baroque and classical dreams.

In the earlier decades, the taste leaned towards a bold, theatrical classicism. At Chatsworth, William Talman’s staircase rises like a ceremony in motion—embellished with painted ceilings and dramatic curves, embodying the early Baroque spirit. Not long after, Houghton Hall, designed by Colen Campbell and William Kent for Sir Robert Walpole, presents a central hall that speaks in Palladian grammar: symmetrical, austere, imperial in scale, yet whispering of rational order. Meanwhile, at Castle Howard, Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor composed a central space of vast verticality and domed glory—more operatic than Roman, but saturated with ambition.

These halls were temples to lineage and intellect, where classical antiquity served the performance of English power.

But by mid-century, a subtler voice emerged. At Holkham Hall, Kent—now matured—collaborated with Thomas Coke to channel the ruins of Rome as they had seen them: noble, unadorned, quiet in grandeur. The entrance becomes an antechamber to history itself.

Then, at Kedleston Hall, Robert Adam completed the arc: a vestibule born not from observation, but from imagination. A Roman fantasy, mathematically idealized, emotionally charged. No longer mere homage, but myth.

These were not halls. They were invocations—architecture as memory, and England’s gentry as inheritors of empire, stepping into their own imagined eternity".

P A L A C I O Real de Madrid... Gasparini Hall P A L A C I O Real de Madrid...
Gasparini Hall and Fernando VII's contribution: the bronze pieces.

"Fernando VII reigned when he was in boga the empire style. It was then bronze gilded was dominated, at its best, as a decorative technique.

As told by @patrimnacional, inventories during the first three decades of the 19th century hundreds of orders were made to Parisian manufacturers

Most palaces were seeking renovation after the riots that occurred during the reign of Joseph I. The merchant Rafael Garreta, through his Carrera de San Jerónimo store, was one of the most prolific suppliers. In 1827 he was commissioned the sumptuous lamp of the King's Chamber where we are now.

Today we can admire at the Royal Palace (and in the rest of the Real Sites) the fan of Fernando VII for the bronze. In each corner of a large number of rooms you will find consoles or pedestals accompanied by neoclassical and empire style chandeliers, clocks and sculptural groups in mercury gilded bronze and large size".
"Rising in elegant curves on an oval floor plan , two staircases lead upward offering a view down into the grotto and culminating in a magnificent domed hall Light pours in from the sides and above – a stunning interplay of movement, light, and space.

Grotto, staircase, and domed hall form a harmonious unit that is truly one of a kind.

Starting in 1728, Balthasar Neumann took over the construction management and in 1731 transformed the original design into one of the most ingenious staircases of the Baroque period With a keen sense of space and proportion, he created an architectural icon that has made Bruchsal Palace famous far beyond the region"

"The C H I N E S E Kitchen at Tureholm Castle in S "The C H I N E S E Kitchen at Tureholm Castle in Sweden is an 18th-century room created in the chinoiserie style, reflecting Europe’s fascination with East Asian art. Commissioned by Count Thure Gabriel Bielke and painted by Carl Fredrik Engelkrona between 1744 and 1746, it was never used for cooking. Instead, it showcased a large collection of blue-and-white porcelain. The room features painted motifs of pagodas, exotic birds, and Chinese figures, all set against faux-marble walls and a dramatic ceiling. Though the porcelain is gone, the richly decorated space remains a poetic tribute to the era’s decorative tastes" via @alidad_ltd
