A collection of three boxes containing framed mid century plaster cast intaglios depicting classical friezes, seals, and cameo portraits. These intaglios—miniature impressions taken from engraved gems, medals, and seals—were especially popular during the 18th and 19th centuries as part of the Grand Tour tradition. Collected as “museums in miniature,” they allowed affluent travellers to bring home curated references to the art and antiquities of Europe. Cast in white plaster or gesso, the pieces are presented within frames and set against original wooden British Museum–style boxes, which have been carefully painted in a traditional green/aqua tone. The intaglios have not been fixed in place, allowing the next owner the flexibility to arrange and display them as desired. Historically, these works served as portable and affordable reproductions of celebrated Classical and Renaissance sculptures, coins, and decorative arts found in cultural centres such as Rome and Florence. Today, antique intaglios are highly collectable and are often displayed against rich, contrasting backgrounds—like the distinctive green shown here—to emphasise the fine detail and subtle relief of each cast. Sold individually.
