A striking Belgian Brutalist console table dating from the late 20th century, featuring a beautifully engraved brass top with an abstract decorative design, in the style of renowned Belgian designer Christian Krekels. The rectangular brass top is finely acid-etched with a bold abstract motif that reflects the sculptural aesthetic associated with Krekels’ celebrated work. (The dark areas visible in the brass are reflections in the polished surface rather than flaws.) The brass top is supported by two substantial slab-form supports finished in a richly textured black and gold lacquer, creating a dramatic faux tortoiseshell or parchment effect. Clean geometric lines are softened by luxurious finishes, combining the strength of Brutalist design with subtle Hollywood Regency influences. Mirror-capped feet provide an elegant finishing touch, reflecting the engraved brass surface above while adding depth, light, and visual balance to the overall composition. Both sculptural and highly functional, this versatile piece would work beautifully as a console table in an entrance hall, behind a sofa, or as an impressive desk. Condition is very good overall, with age-related wear consistent with its vintage nature. There are some age-related splits to the mirrored detailing on the feet, which do not detract from the table’s striking appearance. The console is photographed alongside a signed Christian Krekels square brass coffee table (available separately) to illustrate its stylistic relationship.
