A wonderful example of a 19th-century silver-plated and vermeil monstrance in a radiant sunburst design. It is a sacred vessel that is blessed and used for liturgical services like Eucharistic adoration and processions. The quadrangular base is richly adorned with scrolling motifs and rests on a claw-footed base. The base is decorated with a vermeil Pascal and Holy Spirit lamb. The baluster stem features cherubs and gilded embellishments of wheat sprays and a cluster of grapes symbolising the Eucharist. Surrounding the central luna are finely detailed silver rays forming the “glory,” surmounted by a cross. At its centre, the circular glass-sided gilded metal luna would have originally securely held the consecrated Eucharistic host, allowing it to be reverently displayed for adoration. In the absence of a host, we have placed an antique Papal wax seal in its place.
