A stunning chandelier from Maison Baguès, Paris from the 1940’s. In bronze, gilded and lacquered brass, it features inset crystal pearls and rosettes with hanging crystal pendants. It has been professionally cleaned and re wired to NZ standards. Founded by metalsmith Nöel Baguès in the mid-19th century—either in Auvergne around 1840 or in Paris circa 1860—Maison Baguès began as a maker of bronze candlesticks for churches. With the arrival of Nöel’s son Eugène in 1880, the atelier embraced electric lighting, expanding into finely crafted bronze and crystal fixtures that soon defined its Art Deco style. By the 1920s, Maison Baguès had become synonymous with French elegance, producing gilded iron chandeliers, the iconic Parrots & Foliage models, and decorative metalwork still seen in landmarks like the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Esteemed decorators such as Armand-Albert Rateau, Raymond Subes, and Maison Jansen regularly collaborated with the brand, spreading its influence internationally. After setbacks during the Great Depression, the company was revived in 1957 by Jean-Pierre Baguès, who introduced new designs in the 1960s, including the Perroquet sconces and Imitation Bamboo tables. Today, Maison Baguès continues to celebrate its heritage by restoring and reissuing its most iconic pieces for renowned designers like Alberto Pinto, Pierre-Yves Rochon, and Nina Campbell—ensuring its legacy of exquisite French craftsmanship endures.
