Napoleon III marquetry globe with Virgin Mary and child c.1860

back

Napoleon III marquetry globe with hand painted Virgin Mary and child figurine in OLD PARIS PORCELAIN and paired with matching vases with traces of gilting. Beautiful marquetry inlaid base.

The trade phrase for this ware is Old Paris Porcelain. This is what the French refer to as Vieux Paris porcelain. It refers not to a single source of manufacturing but to more than thirty porcelain factories and studios in and around Paris from about the mid eighteenth century until the end of the Second Empire period or the late 1870s.

The phrase Old Paris Porcelain did not come into use until the late nineteenth century. There is no particular mark that designates Paris porcelain. Many works are unmarked. By the beginnings of the nineteenth century most producers of Old Paris wares were using hard-paste as inspired by the discovery of Kaolin near Limoges.
