Sally Holland is a New Zealand Concept Designer which means that her role is diverse. She has a unique insight over the projects she is involved with – from the planning stages with architects, landscaping, through to the final touches that bring many elements together into a unique and cohesive style. Sally  is well  known for her work in creating Bennetts Chocolatiers retail stores, as well as the build and development of Waiheke Island’s award winning Glenora Estate with her husband Derek.

Glenora Estate won the New Zealand Master Builders Best House Award for Northland and came second for the whole of New Zealand in 1998 and then went on to win one of the top 40 places in the world to marry. In addition it was voted in the top 100 best homes in the world.  Another  property restored in Devonport in 1995 won a Special Merit Award for house restoration by the New Zealand Historic Society.

Recently she has lovingly restored a magnificent house in Devonport, which was built in 1923 for luxury accommodation, aptly named The Summerhouse.  Situated in the maritime village of Devonport, Sally has created a paradise filled with elegance, luxury and character and has offered ‘The Summerhouse’ for intimate weddings and accommodation. With 15 years experience in wedding photography, Sally can take care of almost everything in preparation for those couples who chose to use the space for their special day.

A standout feature of the property is the magnificent English garden, and with the perfume of white roses  and heritage hydrangeas you are transported to a private relaxing haven. Sally has a gift for gardens, describing them as “a frame around the picture” and is tactile in sourcing plants and also involved in the planting. She is quick to admit that she could happily spend all day at wholesalers picking the perfect plants.

Her other recent work includes what she describes as a “long love affair” with Bennetts Chocolatiers in Mangawhai, where she helped transform not only a beautiful Italian-style building into a café, but also a retail business from a cottage industry into an iconic chocolate brand. To date Sally has been involved in the design and manufacture of their three shops, cafe and  the over all interior concept design of Bennetts Mangawhai , and the shops at Auckland International Airport, Farro Fresh and Smith and Caughey.  Sally worked as part of the combined talent group of herself, cabinetmaker Paul Stables, and artist Ross Lewis.

Sally draws her design inspiration from those that she works with, and is a strong believer in teamwork. “Inspiration is drawn from who you’re prepared to listen to, as well as keeping an eye on the international market for ideas.” It is clear that she finds great value in surrounding herself with talented people.

She has chosen to work with European Antiques, and describes owner Meredith as “one of those unique individuals with a brilliant eye for objects of art. She is classical and adventurous, and provides a brilliant advantage of bringing back home what she has learnt overseas.”

With a wealth of experience in working with historic buildings, the latest project to be undertaken is the full restoration of an Arts and Crafts property for clients on the North shore of Auckland.
